Group Commentary

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions for real media products?
Brett: Our media product challenges all conventions for example we don't have any lip syncing this is due to the genre of the band being indie rock, however the song that was chosen we feel was more techno/electronic.
Steven: You can see the evidence of the Goodwin theory through lyrics and visuals.

How effect is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
Craig: The combination of the CD cover and the magazine ad relate with the robot showing the genre of the band, however the video is adverse to the two ancillary texts as it does not contain many robotic influences.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Evaluation - laura brett

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions for real media products?

We have challenged the godwin first point as our video we have no included stage performance's and lip syncing. We had chosen not to obey the first point as we wanted to make more of a comedy aspect to our video. our relationship between lyric and visuals connects with the godwin analysis as our final video contrasts with the lyrics like narrating a story. the relationship between the music and the visuals a lot different. As the genre to our band was 'indie rock' there was only one visual to go with that which was colour. So we challenged it and made it completely different.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Music video, digi pack and the magazine ad all work as a promotional package. the magazine ad helps promote the out coming CD being the digi pack. And then the CD promoting the video. the image the create for the artist is all like a first impression of the whole of the digi pack, and for me first impressions are crucial.

What have you learnt from your audience?
our feed back on our initial pitch helped a lot and was very fair. We got -
Good Editing - The clothes changing were good.
Comical performance fit in well with the genre of the song.
There is no story line but it fits in with the song, especially with the comical effect, it relates to the song but not directly as there is no relationship between the visuals and the lyrics apart from going separate ways.
The concept we had was good.
Craig's performance was good.
The upbeat tempo and genre of the song has a good relationship with the visuals.
What little lyrics there were fitted well with what was going on. "You go your way and I go mine" shows them going opposite directions after a confrontation. But as the song progresses they come back to each other, contrasting the lyrics and visuals.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research and planning and evaluation stages?
At first we had used blogger to create a diary of what we had been doing and the making of our video, second of all we used cameras such as camcorders and still cameras to create storyboards and filming for our final videos. then using final cut to edit our videos. Photoshop helped us with the advertisement also.

Evaluation - Craig Smeaton

In what way does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
Our media product challenges the conventions of music videos as we don't have any lip syncing, this is due to the genre that our song falls under, which is not a mass market genre that doesn't rely on the artists face to sell the music. You can see evidence of Goodwins theory of a relationship between lyrics and visuals, for example, the lyrics "you go your way and I'll go mine" have been visibly translated to the screen as these lyrics are repeated throughout the song. With our Digipak we incorporated the use of Goodwins theory of music and visuals by using robots as we found the music to be slightly Techno/Robotic.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The combination of the CD cover and the Magazine Ad relate as in the colour Black is prodominantly used in both. However, the video is a contrast to the two ancillary texts as it it does not contain a lot of black, it's fast paced whereas even though the two ancillary texts are still shots, they strike you as more of a stationary product. Also, the actual video is quite adverse to the initial impression you'd get if you saw the CD cover and Magazine Ad prior.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

What I've learnt from the audience feedback is that you don't have to conform religiously to the narrative in your video, however you relate to it then it makes it easier and watchable for the audience, and so gaining a better reaction. For instance, we made parts of our video funny which we feel is an uncommon trait to find in a music video.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research and planning and evaluation stages?
We used blogger to help create and map out our journey to overall end up with our final product, it helped us save work that we could only do on the computer then access it at home to carry on and build upon it. We couldn't have created our rough cuts and final cuts without Final Cut so this played a major roll in helping us to achieve this.
